Beautiful and rare chart of the
Southern Coast of Long Island Sound from Forge River to Napeague Harbor. This
chart was published by the United States Coast Survey in 1857 (dated) The chart
shows amazing detail, including numerous soundings and bottom types and a
finely detailed topographical drawing that shows individual roads and
structures. Two pilot profile drawings are shown in the lower right margin and
present a “Ship’s eye view” when approaching land. Moriches and Shinnecock Bay
are displayed with the inlet to Shinnecock shown. The individual Wharves in Sag
Harbor as well as individual buildings are an example of the incredible detail
on Coast Survey charts. The United States Coast Survey was founded in 1807 to
chart the Coastline of the United States. A Swiss Scientist, Ferdinand Hassler
was appointed the first Superintendent of the Coast Survey. In 1879, the name
was changed to the Coast and Geodetic Survey, they are known as NOAA today, and
are the oldest scientific organization in the United States government.
