18 X 22.5

A copy of a rare 1870 (dated) Coast Survey topographical map of the North River, showing the river’s course through the towns of South Scituate, (Norwell), Hanover and Marshfield. Chart shows great detail or surrounding marshland and tributaries, Herring River, Third and Fourth cliffs, Little’s, Union and North River bridges and Roger’s Wharf, there are no depth soundings. The mouth of the river is drawn at the foot of Telegraph hill in Marshfield/Rexhame, and “Shingle Dyke” at the present mouth at New Inlet and the Spit. A notable geographic feature is the location of the mouth of the North river, in Rexhame, Marshfield, The course of the river was altered during the Portland Gale, November 26 and 27, 1898 separating the Humarock portion of Scituate from the rest of Scituate. The storm killed more than 400 persons and sank more than 150 boats and ships.  The sketch was published by the United States Coast Survey, which is the oldest scientific organization in the federal government, founded in 1807 by Thomas Jefferson; the Office of the coast survey did most of its important work from 1843 to 1865 under the leadership of A.D. Bache, a great grandson of Benjamin Franklin. Bache was succeeded by Benjamin Peirce (pronounced “purse”) (1809-1880) who led the survey from 1867 to 1864, born in Salem, MA. Peirce was a mathematics professor at Harvard until his death in 1880. The topographic survey for this sketch was done under the supervision of  Otto Hilgard Tittmann (1850-1938) who started working for the survey at age 17 and went on to become superintendent and was a co-founder of the National Geographic Society and Henry Laurens Whiting (1821-1897), who was considered to be one of the best nineteenth century topographers, and was a professor at MIT and an instructor in harbor surveying at the U.S. Naval Academy, this survey was performed by his M.I.T students. Commodore Whiting was also a longtime resident of West Tisbury, MA
