Uncommon nautical map of Hatteras and Ocracoke inlet published by the United States Coast Survey in 1857 (dated) This chart was the first US government issued map of these two inlets together. Hatteras inlet was breeched during a fierce Hurricane in 1846 that claimed the lives of ten crewmen off the Coast Survey brig Peter Washington, including the brother of the survey superintendant George Bache. Shown are numerous soundings, shoals and other dangers. Landmarks include Teache's Hole, Pamlico sound, Ourdley's Hammock and Oliver's Channel. Very good condition, foldmarks as origianlly issued reinforcement on verso, else good.
