Rare Old Historic Antique Nautical Chart Reproduction showing Chesapeake Bay 1859

Published in 1859, this beautiful and uncommon chart shows the progress of the Coast Survey in Chesapeake Bay.  The purpose of this chart was to document the progress of the triangulation during the survey of the coastline.  An instrument called a Theodolite was used to measure angles between points.  It often took a decade or more to produce a chart.  Numerous survey points are shown and are typically named as to the type of station such as Astronomical, Tidal, magnetic or current. This highly accurate chart was one of the first produced by the United States Government. The chart covers an area from Norfolk Virginia to Cape May New Jersey and to the head of Chesapeake Bay.
