 United States Coast Survey chart of Charleston South Carolina from the 1866 Coast Survey report. Rare hand colored chart of Charleston Harbor showing amazing detail as is typical in Coast survey charts.  Several prominent forts are shown including fort Sumter and fort Moultrie. Numerous sounds expressed in feet with depth contour curves at 6, 12 and 18 feet. The topography is very detailed and individual streets and houses as well as countless landmarks. The lightship “Weehawken” shown positioned off of Morris Island is anchored over the Union Monitor Weehawken, which after surviving numerous battles including direct hits by cannon fire and a torpedo exploding directly under her keel, reportedly sank while at anchor in a gale due to overloading of ammunition in the bow.
