Cape Cod Canal

24" X 16"

Rare Old Historical Map Reproduction of the Cape Cod Canal

A charming chart / map showing detailed information for transiting the Cape Cod Canal.  The idea for a canal was floated as far back as 1623 by Myles Standish, looking for a way to join the Manomet and Scusset rivers.  A private venture dug the canal and it opened in 1916.  Many large glacial boulders impeded dredging and divers were brought in to blow the boulders up. The Canal was a toll waterway until 1928 when taken over by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
