Rare Old Historic Antique Nautical Chart Reproduction showing Cape Cod Bay 1872

A rare hand colored Coast and Geodetic Survey chart of Cape Cod Bay, published in 1872 with navigational aids corrected to 1885. (See date on chart.)  The chart’s boundaries extend north to show Plymouth Harbor, Duxbury Bay, and the southern tip of Stellwagen’s Bank.  It’s boundaries to the south show Pleasant Bay, Orleans, Barnstable Harbor, and Sandwich.  This chart shows numerous soundings and bottom sediment types.  Lighthouses, lifesaving stations, and floating navigational aids are shown.  Several lighthouses have their sound characteristics displayed.  Tables listing types of bottom, lighthouses, tide information and distance scales can be found in the left hand border of the chart. There are three beautiful pilot drawings of the outer Cape Highlands and Nausett above the lower border. This chart was published under the supervision of Carlile Pollock Patterson Superintendent of the Coast Survey from 1874 to 1871.
